Where does the Royal Shea Butter come from?
I love using my own natural Royal Shea butter! My family on my father’s side is from the Northern part of Ghana and ever since I can remember they have used shea butter to cook all kinds of delicious soups. Seven years ago when they were to come visit me, they asked me what they should bring for me. Happily, I asked for Shea Butter, which they found very strange. “You’re in Europe. Why would you still use shea butter?” they asked. In this article you’ll discover all the reasons why.
Where can the Shea tree be found?
The Royal Shea Butter from ‘Handemade Bysanaah’ is extracted from the nuts of the Shea-Karite tree in Ghana. This 100% natural butter is traditionally made by the women of the village. They pick the nuts with their hands, crack and grill them and lastly they pound them. After hours of boiling, the Shea Butter comes to the surface. Then it’s left to cool and set. (As we only sell the raw unrefined Shea Butter we will skip the explanation of how refined shea butter comes to be.
Where do I keep my Royal Shea Butter?
An old boyfriend of mine used to leave his butter outside the refrigerator, which I never understood. However with Shea Butter, it makes perfect sense. After all, my ancestors never had a fridge but they did keep their Shea Butter at a cool place. This way it stays tenable for years.

Why buy your Royal Shea Butter from Handmade BySanaah?
I came to the Netherlands at a young age. At the time, most people thought all Africans where starving or dying due to the aids epidemic. They knew very little about the real Africa. Unfortunately, there are still companies that exploit the image of the poor African to boost their sales. As a Ghanaian-Dutch woman, I want to show the world what Ghana has to offer. Thanks to my connection with Ghana, I can buy Shea Butter directly from the locals. Big companies often have to use an intermediary or expensive properties. By buying your Shea Butter from ‘Handmade BySanaah’, you support the Ghanaian as well as the Dutch economy, because the Shea Butter is made in Ghana but packed in Holland. The best thing about African products is that they‘re not just for Africans. They’re for everybody who wants to practice self-care.
