Fertility Is Bigger Than Babies

When we hear the word fertility, we often think of pregnancy first. As a mother, I understand why. But fertility is also the idea that refuses to leave you alone. It is the dream you keep returning to, the business that begins at your kitchen table and the new chapter that starts with one brave decision.

I started BySanaah in 2018 with traditional Ghanaian waist beads and an idea. That idea became collections, markets, Waist Beads Parties, stories and a community of women learning to see their bodies differently.

That is fertility too.

It is the ability to take something that only exists inside you and give it a place in the world.

Your Ewe Friday Name

Within Ewe-speaking communities, Afi is one of the traditional names given to a girl born on Friday. The commonly used male Friday name is Kofi.

In Ghana, a day name can connect you to your birth, your family and the day your story began. For this collection, I paired the Ewe name Afi with the traditional Akan symbolism connected to Friday: fertility.

My Friday Woman reading is a creative interpretation of that symbolism. Afi does not promise pregnancy or any medical outcome. She represents your ability to create, nurture and grow what matters to you.

Afi was created exclusively for women born on a Friday. You do not have to be Ghanaian to wear her. You only need to respect the Ghanaian traditions behind her and possess the correct Friday credentials.

Her Details

Afi is a traditional tie-on waist bead handmade with glass beads, natural carnelian and cotton string. She has no clasp and no elastic. Once tied, she remains around your waist while you sleep, shower and live your life. As your body changes, Afi may sit higher, lower, tighter or looser. She helps you notice your body without judging or punishing it.

Small differences in the natural stone, colour and bead placement make every waist bead unique.
